A comprehensive guide to deep conditioning your hair at home

Our skin and hair have always been associated with a myriad of problems that mostly occur due to constant heat exposure, pollution, and other environmental stressors. And these factors can easily take a toll not only on your skin but your hair as well. Taking care of your hair and tending to it is as important as you pamper and look after your skin. Hair that is not looked after can easily get damaged and brittle over time. And this is when deep conditioning comes to save the day.
While applying a regular conditioner to your hair does help in making it soft and hydrated but deep conditioning takes things to a whole new level. Deep conditioning comes with a handful of benefits, it not only prevents split ends and hair breakage but it also promotes elasticity and improves hair texture. Deep conditioning works very effectively on colored and damaged hair as they require more tending and care. If you don’t own a deep conditioner then you can also follow this process using a regular conditioner. We have created a comprehensive guide for you in which all the steps that you need to follow are mentioned.

Wash and cleanse your hair properly

For deep conditioning to work effectively for you, it’s essential that you follow the procedure on squeaky clean hair. Therefore, before you start to deep condition your hair, make sure to wash it thoroughly using shampoo. Cleansing your hair thoroughly helps in opening up your pores which makes it easy for the conditioner to penetrate deeper into the scalp. On the other hand, if you do this treatment on dirty hair, the product build-up and greasiness will not allow the conditioner to get absorbed by your scalp.

Pick the right conditioner

Much like your skin, you have to be extremely careful with the type of products you are using on your hair. And when it comes to deep conditioning, firstly, you need to figure out what results you’re trying to achieve out of this procedure. For instance, if you have dull and lifeless hair then you probably should pick a conditioner that comes with repair and regenerative properties. The end result will depend on the kind of hair conditioner you have picked.

Apply the conditioner thoroughly

If you are using a deep conditioner then well and good and if not, then make sure that you are applying the conditioner an inch away from the roots. In a typical deep conditioning method, the product is usually supposed to be applied from the roots but since you’re using a regular conditioner, it’s better that you keep it away from the roots. Use a wide-toothed comb to spread the conditioner evenly through your mane and make sure that it has been applied nicely on the ends as they are much drier than the rest of your hair.

Wrap your hair with a warm towel

Giving your hair a warm towel treatment is one of the most important steps of this entire process. Once you have put on the conditioner, wrap your hair with a warm towel. A warm towel can easily be arranged by soaking it in water, removing excess water, and then placing it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. The heated towel will help the conditioner to get deeper into your scalp. You can keep the conditioner on for as long as 3 to 4 hours, just keep warming the towel to keep your head refreshed.

Rinse hair with cold water

After three to four hours of applying the conditioner, you can rinse off the product using cold water. The cold water will help to close hair cuticles and seal in the moisture. You can follow this treatment every once or twice a week to keep your hair strong and healthy.
